Description/Job Summary

REFRIGERATION OPERATORThe purpose of a Refrigeration Technician is to safely operate the ammonia refrigeration system and its related equipment by adhering to Standard Operating Procedures and Perdue Safety Procedures; to diagnose system problems and make repairs; maintain the ammonia refrigeration system ensuring a safe work environment, ensuring compliance with all applicable safety and environmental laws; and ensure records are maintained and retained to ensure safe, effective and efficient operations.


1 Pass a physical, pulmonary test, SCBA fit test and meet the requirement for a HAZMAT Team Member annually. 2 Use personal protective equipment properly when required by federal, state or company policies, requirements, or procedures.3 Comply with all federal, state and company safety requirements. 4 Must be able to operate all refrigeration systems in the plant and to safely isolate and pump down any section of all systems. 5 Must be able to do all startups, shutdowns and defrost procedures on all plant refrigeration systems. 6 Must be able to control the function of all refrigeration systems in the plant: A. Area temperature B. Ice production C. Water temperatures 7 Must be able to perform all operational procedures: A. Rounds B. Oil draining C. Oil Adding D. Posting all logs 8 Proficient and working knowledge of all department personal computers and use of software 9 Must be able to do all emergency shutdowns, startups, resets & restart failed equipment and put all systems back on line. 10 Must be trained on all refrigeration SOPs. 11 Must have a clear understanding and demonstrate that understanding of the relationship between pressure and temperature in a refrigeration system and of refrigerant expansion with pressure temperature variables.12 Must understand heat transfer in a refrigeration system.13 Must be able to do all PM procedures in refrigeration.14 Must be qualified to do auger maintenance.15 Perform maintenance activities such as, but not limited to, bearing and belt replacement, coupling alignment, etc.16 Must be able to do opening procedure.17 Must be qualified to receive or transfer ammonia in all plant systems.18 Must be qualified to do routine maintenance on: A. Ammonia compressors B. Air compressors C. Ammonia liquid pumps D. Ammonia system controls E. Air system controls F. Air system drying equipment G. Refrigeration system condensers19 Must be able to direct and train operators.20 Perform other related task as assigned by management.21 Must be able to perform all Senior Refrigeration Technician requirements prior to being promoted from Technician.22 To be eligible for promotion: A. Must have been in current position for twelve (12) months B. No more than two (2) OSHA recordables within a twelve (12) month period and has worked six (6) months without an incident. C. No more than two (2) unexcused absences. D. No active disciplinary records. E. Must be able to perform all senior technician requirements prior to being considered for promotionF. Obtained all certifications

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent with strong reading, communications, math, writing, and analytical skills.Associate degree in Industrial Refrigeration preferred.Specialized or technical knowledge, credentials or licensing required for the position include: Working knowledge of Occupational Safety Health Administration (O. S. H. A.) (in South Carolina it is known as Labor, Licensing & Regulation LLR ); knowledge and experience using computers (PCs) and software (Lotus 1-2-3, WordPro, Freelance Graphics, Excell, Word, Power Point); knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems; and knowledge of the Process Safety Management (PSM) Program.Must have mechanical aptitude.Must pass and/or be licensed on: pulmonary test and medical physical, SCBA fit test certification, Lock-Out / Tag-Out certification, hot work permit requirements certification, confined space entry requirements certification, and pass all requirements and certifications to be a member of the HAZMAT Team.Must supply own tools necessary to operate and perform preventative inspections.The minimum number of Years and/or Months of Prior and Related experience preferred to be considered for this position is: 2/Year/s 6 Months work experience in ammonia refrigeration required.Preferred education will be accepted in lieu of one (1) year of experience.The following skills must be mastered and proficiency demonstrated to be promoted or hired into this position: 1. Complete HAZWOPER training requirements 2. Identify and correct for Process Deviations 3. Correctly interpret P&IDs 4. How to perform PM inspections 5. Proper use of Volt-Ohm Meter 6. Attended compressor school 7. Attain RETA A Certification 8. Properly perform maintenance and isolation SOPs 9. Have attended an outside of work training on refrigeration operations (proof required) 10. Proper operation and PM of other related equipment such as: Boilers, Air Compressors and Ventilation systems11. Perform proper line break and purge procedures (not certified for ammonia)

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
